7th Acero-class Patrol Vessel Named “BRP Tomas Campo (PG908)”
Naming of Philippine Navy vessels usually came out through its Public Relations Office (PIO) channels, unveiling the progress and development of the newly purchased vessels of the fleet and providing the added glimpse to the names it bears.
Recently, the news that came out regarding the assembly and fitting out of Acero-class vessel PG-909 in Cavite Naval Shipyard during the visit of the Israeli ambassador to the Philippines in the facility, highlighting the cooperation between both countries, particularly to the Philippines’ desire to improve its naval capabilities and putting the principle of Self Reliance Defense Posture or SRDP into action.
During the visit, the eagle-eyed people of the defense community as posted on our fellow defense counterpart MaxDefense Philippines posted that the name of the PG-909 is the BRP Albert V Majini, named after a Philippine Navy ensign who was a Medal of Valor awarded posthumously, whose life have sacrificed serving in the line of duty as a gunnery officer of BRP Rajah Lakandula (PF-4) Frigate.
Now, the news proceeds to the farewell visit of VAdm. Toribio Adaci as the Flag Officer-In-Charge of the Philippine Navy, as he sets on his way to retirement from active duty as a commissioned officer of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ naval service branch. During his farewell visit, the Philippine fleet posted an image of an Acero-class, disclosing that it is the PG-908, now bearing the name “BRP Tomas Campo”.
This means that PG-908 Acero-class Fast Attack Interdiction Craft-Missile (FAIC-M) has named after Sgt. Tomas V Campo of the Philippine Marine Corps’ Marine Battalion Landing Team 10 (MBLT-10), who also got the Medal of Valor after showing his bravery and heroism in Liangan River, Munai Lanao del Norte when he tends to the ten (10) injured troops within their platoon, until he got shot by a sniper after pulling out their platoon commander to safety, costing his life.
As the understanding that the Acero-class Fast Attack Interdiction Crafts now patterned its naming after known Medal of Valor awardees, it ultimately provides the recognition of bravery and heroism of the namesakes of the vessels in the line of battle, eternalizing their contribution of defending the country’s sovereignty and citizenry against multiple threats that put harm into the peace desired by the Filipino people.
